There's a good article on cryptic crosswords in The Times2 today and it features a colour coded description of how one arrives at the solution. You can read the article online and the colour graphic for the solution is here. Unfortunately there are some typos in it (see 26 ac's "..to get a word meaning", also the clue for 2 dn is faulty, it should say operations) nonetheless it's a good introduction to the main types of clue.
